Introduction
Bone and joint infections have become of great concern because of the increasing number of trauma, prosthetic surgeries and invasive diagnostic procedures, especially in the elderly population, which are increasingly responsible for post-traumatic osteomyelitis, prosthetic joint infections and spondylodiskitis, respectively.

Bone infections are frequently associated with soft tissue infection and vice versa such as in diabetic foot infections, infected pressure ulcers and many other instances.

Both infections, localized at bone and joints and/or at soft tissue are becoming more difficult to treat because the prevalence of resistance among causative pathogens, especially MRSA and MRCNS.

A closer collaboration should be established for the optimal treatment and most appropriate management of these infections between surgeon, orthopedist and infectious diseases specialist, who can bridge the gap between the guidelines and the individual needs of the patient, thereby improving the “decision-making process”.

Aims of Working Group
To improve the diagnostic and therapeutic standard procedures of bone and soft tissue infections encouraging the collaboration between orthopaedist, surgeon and ID specialist underlining his possible role as consultant.

Working plan

1)To organize educational meetings on management of bone and soft tissue infection with special concern to the epidemiology of bacterial resistance, microbiological diagnostic procedures and use of conventional and new available antibacterial agents
2)To promote a “network” collecting data from those ID centres with prevalent interest of these infections to evaluate the epidemiology, aetiology and therapeutic decisions
3)To develop practice guidelines or recommendations for a correct approach for diagnosis and treatment

Possible meetings
One-day course for close-number (30-50) young ID specialists as pre-meeting of the 9th Edition of IBAT Congress held in Naples in January 2009.
