I write to bring you news of the continuing development of our society and to update you on the exciting collaboration between ISC and ESCMID as we look forward to the joint ICC and ECCMID next year.

Registration is now open. Please note that members of the federation of ISC Member-Societies are eligible for reduced registration fees. The only stipulation is that the Member Society should first submit details of their members to F. MacKenzie, ISC Executive Co-ordinator (isc@abdn.ac.uk).
Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is fast approaching: it is 16 November 2006. Please consider submitting your best research results to this prestigious congress in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.

Travel Awards

Please note that the invitation for some of the ISC awards is still open.

ECCMID / ICC Travel Grants 2007
ESCMID and ISC will support up to 70 young scientists to travel to the ECCMD / ICC, providing full congress registration and a travel allowance. They will waive the registration fee for a further 25 young researchers. Deadline for applications is 21st November 2006. Full details available at www.eccmid-icc.org

ISC Inter American Society of Chemotherapy (IASC) Travel Grant
This award is offered to enable a young participant (< 35 years) from Central / South America to attend the ECCMID / ICC in 2007. Deadline for applications is 21st November 2006. Full details available at www.eccmid-icc.org

ISC Working Groups

We are encouraged by the interest amongst some of our members in creating and progressing the ISC Working Groups. Whilst some are relatively new, others have been established for some time and are very active. To find out more about the Working Groups and their aims and activities, please click here.

Our Working Groups play a major role on the first day of the ICC / ECCMID next year. The ISC Working Group on Infections in the ICU will host an educational workshop and seven of our other Working Groups have organised parallel working sessions. The 10th Western Pacific Congress of Chemotherapy and Infectious Diseases is being held under the auspices of the ISC from 3-6 December 2006 in Fukuoka, Japan. The meeting is being held in Japan for the first time.

The theme of the meeting is “New Advances in Chemotherapy and Infectious Diseases" and a warm welcome is extended to all by the congress Chairman; Joichi Kumazawa. For further information, please go to www.congre.co.jp/10wpccid/
The ISC Cancer Section is particularly active.
In conjunction with Imedex Inc, this section recently organised the very successful 6th Princess Margaret Hospital Conference: New Developments in Cancer Management, held on 4-6 October, 2006 in Toronto, Canada. There was a tremendous amount of positive feedback from the attendees regarding the superb faculty and quality of the scientific program.

The next cancer meeting will be the 3rd International Conference on Cancer Therapeutics held in 6-8 December 2006 Tokyo, Japan. It is organised by the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology. For further information, please go to www2.convention.co.jp/isc2006/

Global Prevalence Study on Nosocomial UTI in Urology (GPIU 2006)

Together with other scientific societies ISC is once again supporting the GPIU Study 2006.
Urologists in cooperation with ID specialist and Clinical Microbiologist are encouraged to take part in this study.
  • More than 10 000 urological patients have been screened for nosocomial infections in the GPIU/PEAP-studies
  • A GPIU database with more than 1000 patients with NAUTI has been established
  • GPIU-investigators will receive EU-ACME credit points

The Study-day is one of the following days: Nov. 15, Nov. 22, Nov. 29. 2006.
Each urology department chooses freely the day that fits best for them.

Study-report forms will be available through the UROWEB on www.uroweb.org/gpiu2006 after 1 November 2006.

ISC Executive Committee
There are vacancies for four ordinary members of the ISC Executive Committee, which have to be filled at the next formal meeting of the Committee. Nominations should be made by Members of the ISC Council, in writing, to either Professor Kurt Naber or Professor Teresita Mazzei by 30th November 2006.
